Let's set a couple things straight about the game Okami:

1. Amaterasu does NOT belong to Capcom. The wolf form of Amaterasu belongs to Capcom, and the game Okami belongs to Capcom, but Amaterasu does not. Amaterasu is the actual main deity of the Shinto religion, NOT just a fictional game character.


2. Shiranui in her true form in-game is considered male, but is actually female. All forms of Amaterasu are female. Amaterasu is the sun goddess and guardian of the Earth.


3. Shiranui is not purely Amaterasu in her full power, but a previous form of the actual (actual being in-game) god. Amaterasu is a rebirth of Shiranui called forth when Yami escaped.


4. In the game, Amaterasu has no real gender. However, she is known as a woman for the name "Ammy" that Issun gives her when he first meets her. It's the same for Shiranui. Since Shiranui was just thought to be some old stray dog and a familiar of Orochi, he was often called a male by citizens. It's kind of like a little kid seeing a random dog and saying, "Aww, look at the puppy! He's so cute!"


5. It is often mistaken that Amaterasu's full name is Okami Amaterasu. WRONG. The true name of Amaterasu is Amaterasu-ōmikami.


6. Pronunciation of Amaterasu is also often mistaken. A lot of people pronounce it (am-UH-ter-ahh-sue). It's pronounced (uhm-AH-ter-ahh-sue) with a bit of the trill on the r.


7. As previously stated, Amaterasu is a rebirth of Shiranui. The next game, Okamiden, really screwed up this concept. Shiranui was considered Chibi's grandfather, and Chibi was considered Amaterasu's son, which is not the case at all. Chibi is yet another rebirth, which is for some reason shown as a child.



And some interesting facts about the game and Shinto religion/where the game takes place:

-Issun is always called a bug in-game for laughs. In his original form, he actually was a bug, but instead of having a little bug the creators of Okami decided to make him slightly more annoying by making him a tiny bouncing man.

-Nippon is literally Japanese for Japan.

-Nagi and Nami come from Izanagi and Izanami, who are the mother and father of all creation.

-In Okami, when you power slash something that you can't hurt, the Kanji that appears says "useless".
